—— The Natural Greenery of an Icelandic Artist
On May 6, 2026, the exhibition Shedding, co-organised by the Embassy ofIceland in China, Winland Group, and Carte Blanche, opened at WinlandInternational Finance Center in Beijing's Financial Street, presenting theverdant works of Icelandic artist Dominique Ambroise Ibsen.
H.E. Thorir Ibsen, Ambassador of Iceland toChina, artist Dominique Ambroise Ibsen, curator Gu Zhenqing, and Yu Zhiqiang,Chairman of Winland Group, attended the opening ceremony.
The theme of this exhibition – "Shedding" – originates from the artist's lifelongexperience of living across borders, marked by continuous letting go andrenewal. Through layered greens and shifting light and shadow, she pours herunderstanding of nature and the wisdom of decluttering onto the canvas.
"For decades, painting breathtakingnatural landscapes – forests, parks – has been my way of approaching, immersingmyself in, and embracing each new place I live, of mapping my inner geography. But as most of you know, the life of a diplomat's spouse means facing a longlist of new destinations – places whose climates, flora and fauna, andeven human societies differ vastly. It also means an equally long list offarewells – leaving behind the places we have alreadyembraced. In this exhibition, I present these successive processes of"shedding". The idea of exhibiting in Beijing took shape little bylittle after the pandemic. Due to a series of unforeseen circumstances, theexhibition was postponed until our final month in Beijing. And this timingcoincided with the very real process of "shedding" my life in Beijingthat I was experiencing. Thank you all for being here with me at thismoment."
— Dominique Ambroise Ibsen | Artist
"I am a first-generation curator in China. It has been nearly forty years since the 1990s, and I have travelled toseventy-nine countries and regions, engaging and exchanging ideas with artistsfrom different cultures for mutual learning. I hope to invite more artists toexhibit in China and to bring more Chinese artists to exhibit around the world.Dominique Ambroise Ibsen's work moved me the moment I saw it. She is an artistwho has discovered that nature and humanity can coexist in harmony. As adiplomat's spouse, she has moved across the world like a nomad. The first work inthe exhibition is titled "Chaoyang Park", inspired by her experienceof nature during the pandemic. She sought the green of the outer world to findher inner self, rediscovering her heart and the unity of heaven and humanity. So the word "Shedding" signifies a metamorphosis, and also a rebirth,a vitality. I hope every visitor can be touched by this shade of green and findmeaning and eternity in life."
