Winland Summer Concerts
2012 Festival Croisements
—— The Winland Concert
As spring turned into summer, nature showed its riotous beauty. The Third Festival Croisements Winland Concert was held, as the fragrance of the flowers hung in the air like a beautiful melody.
The mystery and lyricism of Debussy’s music were emblematic of Impressionism. Mussorgsky’s colorful pieces are classics of Russian folk-influenced music from the Romantic period. Beethoven’s works contain deep and majestic emotion, and as such, they are some of the most glorious creations of the transformative period from Classicism to Romanticism. At this concert, France’s Quatuor Diotima presented a classic work by Beethoven, “String Quartet No. 14.” On the piano, Claudia Yang portrayed the hazy moonlight and passionate joy written by Debussy and the profound yet lively “pictures” painted by Mussorgsky. These pieces drew listeners into the diverse styles of Romantic music.
